Training Information

SafeTALK Training – Suicide alertness for everyone

Suicide alert helpers are part of a suicide-safer community

SafeTALK is a dynamic new program that allows people to quickly develop helpful suicide intervention abilities. It is a Best Practice Registry program in the U.S. and is part of Choose Life, Scotland’s national strategy and action plan to prevent suicide.

SafeTALK Helpers

  • Are aware that opportunities to help a person with thoughts of suicide are sometimes missed, dismissed and avoided
  • Know the TALK steps (Tell, Ask, Listen, KeepSafe) that can activate a suicide alert
  • Can connect persons with thoughts of suicide to persons trained in suicide intervention

Participants will receive a 24-page resource book, pocket card reminder of the TALK steps and two reusable stickers identifying the participant’s willingness and ability to help.

As more suicide alert helpers become available, more people with thoughts of suicide can be connected to the intervention help they need.

Special conference opportunity to become a safeTALK trainer

You are encouraged to apply if you have completed an ASIST workshop, have good group facilitation skills, are committed to promoting suicide safety through open and direct talk, and are willing to undertake pre and post training work. Accepted applicants will receive login access to a web-based trainer manual, video demo of safeTALK, a study guide and a part to present. The training provides many opportunities for you to discuss and practice the concepts you have learned. Expect a positive learning environment, respect for differences, support for each other, and active participation.
